  88.     at the "Farewell Dance" is dressed up. Rasczak and other TEACHERS
  89.     chaperon. A spotlight finds the BAND LEADER.

  92.         Alright, everybody, this is the last dance, so
  93.         let's turn down the lights and make it a
  94.         slow one.

  96.     The lights go down. Dizzy, dressed pretty, brightens when she sees Johnny
  97.     standing alone near the dance floor.

  100.         Hey, Rico, wanna dance ?

  103.         Actually, Diz, I promised Carmen...

  152.     dance. Johnny wants to kiss her, Carmen playfully avoids.

  177.     Johnny's confidence makes her smile. Johnny moves in to kiss her,
  178.     but the music ends. Everyone applauds. The lights come up and 
  179.     people head for the doors. Johnny sees Rasczak.

  182.         Wait, I want to talk to Mr. Rasczak.

  184.                 CARMEN
  185.         I'll meet you outside.

  187.     Johnny heads over to Rasczak.

  196.         I just wanted to say thanks 'cause History
  197.         and Moral Philosophy was the best class

  227.     uniform of a Fleet pilot trainee. Carmen examines his FLEET PIN,
  228.     a pair of silver wings.

  234.         Yeah, we know each other from the game. 
  235.         No hard feeling, eh, chum ?

  243.     Zander takes back the wings and pins the to his tunic.

  305.     including a POLICEMAN.

  308.         Everyone's looking... we shouldn't...

  323.     kissing at her front door. Johnny moves his hand tenatively to Carmen 's breast.
  324.     She takes his hand, smiling, puts it under her shirt.

  332.     She puts her mouth on his and they melt together. The door flies open,
  333.     and CARMEN'S DAD stands there.

  341.     Carmen ducks inside. Her father looks Johnny over. He carries a terrible
  342.     battle scar oon his face.

  345.         I don't want you around Carmen anymore. Get me ?

  348.         Maybe Carmen's gonna make her own decisions from
  349.         now on, Mr. Ibanez.

  351.     Carmen's Dad reddens. He'd like to punch Johnny out.

  353.                 CARMEN'S DAD
  354.         Carmen's gonna be a citizen. She don't need you
  355.         and your rich family. The Federation'll give her
  356.         everything she needs.

  358.                 CARMEN (O.S.)
  359.         Dad, leave him alone...

  361.     Carmen's Dad slams the door in Johnny's face.

  363. 33    EXT    FEDERAL BUILDING - DAY - JOHNNY AND CARMEN

  365.     meet Carl in front of the induction center where a staedy flow of prospective
  366.     citizens file through the main doors.
  367.  
  368. 34    INT    LOBBY - DAY - THE RECRUITING SERGEANT
  369.  
  370.     is missing one arm. He smiles broadly at the three teenagers.
  371.  
  372.                 RECRUITING SERGEANT
  373.         Fresh meat for the grinder, eh ?
  374.  
  375.                 CARL
  376.         That's us. Where do we sign ?
  377.  
  378.     He turns in his chair to grab the forms. Johnny and his friends see that he is also
  379.     missing both legs. The Recruiting Sergeant catches them looking, 
  380.     smiles even wider.

  385.     As he signs, Johnny looks at the campaign ribbons on the Recruiting Sergeant's
  386.     chest. We hear MUSIC:     "The Mobile Infantery Anthem" plays softly in honor
  387.     of distant battles.

  390.         Welcome to the adventure of Federal Service.
  391.         Follow the blue line.
  392.  
  393. 35    INT    PROCESSING HALL - DAY - JOHNNY, CARMEN AND CARL

  395.     are routed into different lines, joining other hopeful civilians.
  396.     A COLONEL makes a speech over the loudspeaker.
  397.  
  398.                 COLONEL
  399.         There is no guarantee of service. We don't need
  400.         all of you. It costs a great deal to train human beings
  401.         for useful tasks. Many jobs are hazardous to your
  402.         health. If you are chosen and do not wish to serve
  403.         you may resign at anytime simply by completing 
  404.         form 1240/A. Thank you for exercising you
  405.         constitutonal rights.

  409.     and others in the line strip down. The guy in front of Johnny is
  410.     DON, 18, athletic and cheerful.

  417.     grimaces as a TECHNICIAN installs an INTERFACE PLATE on 
  418.     his side, drawing fluids.

  423.     A PSYCH OFFICER sits down across from each candidate.

  434.     The Psych Officer checks Johnny's response on a meter.

  439.     stimuli, and scanned from head to toe.

  475.         Boy, look at those reaction stats.

  477.     The Major clucks his tongue as he highlights the last category on his list:

  482.         best suited for.

  485.         I want to be a pilot, sir.

  488.         Sorry, son, no way. Your school records
  489.         say you don't have the math skills.

  491.     Johnny swallows this. He knew it was coming. The Major deletes
  492.     "Pilot" from the list, then several other items.

  495.         That rules out the scientific and engineering
  496.         applications, and I'm afraid we reserve
  497.         non-military options for candidates who are
  498.         frankly less able-bodied than you are, son...
  499.  
  500.     He turns the monitor around and shows Johnny the list.
  501.     The only thing left is MOBILE INFANTERY.
  502.  
  503.                 MAJOR
  504.         It looks like the only thing you're good
  505.         for is cannon fodder.
  506.         I'm putting you down for the
  507.         Mobile Infantery.
  508.  
  509. 40    INT    AUDITORIUM - DAY - CARMEN

  511.     proudly takes the Federal Service oath with about twenty-five other people,
  512.     a gleaming silver FLEET PIN on her chest. She looks around for Johnny, 
  513.     sees him grinning at her.

  515.                 JOHNNY ET AL
  516.         ...of my own free will, without promise, coercion,
  517.         or inducement, after having been duly advised
  518.         and warned of the meaning and consequence of
  519.         this oath, do now enroll in the Federal Service
  520.         of the Terran Federation for not less than two
  521.         years and as much longer as may be required 
  522.         by the needs of the Service...

  524. 41    INT    FEDERAL BUILDING - LOBBY - DAY - JOHNNY AND CARMEN

  526.     walk out together happily, hand in hand.

  534.     Just then, Don rushes past, shamefaced, crying.

  543.     The Recruiting Sergeant is getting ready to go home. He's got legs now,
  544.     and he takes a prosthetic arm from its case and snaps it on.
  545.     He grins when he sees them staring.

  548.         They put me out front to discourage the weak-hearted,
  549.         but at the end of the day I go home.
  550.         How'd you kids do ?

  552.                 CARMEN
  553.         I'm gonna go for pilot.

  555.                 RECRUITING SERGEANT
  556.         Good for you. We need every pilot we can get.
  557.  
  558.     Johnny holds the door for Carmen and the Recruiting Sergeant. 
  559.     Suddenly Carl appears looking a little paler than usual.

  562.         Hey, Carl, what's wrong ?

  565.         Did you get Starside R&D ?

  596.     The Recruiting Sergeant beams, offers a prosthetic hand.

  602.     Just what Johnny wanted to hear. They watch the old Sergeant walk
  603.     away.    MUSIC:    "The Mobile Infantery Theme".
  604.     Carmen takes Johnny and Carl by the arm as they walk.

  607.         Let's all make a vow. Let's swear we'll always
  608.         be friends no matter what.

  611.         I'll go for that.

  614.         Well, we're gonna be millions of light years away
  615.         from each other, and chances are we'll never see
  616.         each other again, but sure...

  619.         I can't wait to tell my Dad I'm in.
  620.         He's gonna be so happy !

  623.         My father's probably gonna kill me.

  647.     Johnny turns for the door. His father throws his last shot.

  656.     walks out, grim, sees his mother, tears in her eyes.

  670.         over some silly little girl who wants to look

  673.     Johnny's face reddens.

  678.     Johnny turns on his heel, heads for the transporter.        ZAPPP !

  680. 45    EXT    FEDERAL TRANSPORTATION HUB - DAY - JOHNNY

  682.     looks for Carmen among hundreds of young people bound for 
  683.     Federal Service destinations. Recruits wear civilian clothes.
  684.     Everyone else is in uniform.

  686.                 P.A. (O.S.)
  687.         Outbound group 1380, Ursa Minor
  688.         and Tyko, now transporting at 
  689.         bank 17...
  690.  
  691.     Now he sees her entering struggling with luggage. Johnny rushes to
  692.     help her and soon he is carrying all her bags.
  693.  
  694.                 JOHNNY
  695.         You're late.
  696.  
  697.                 CARMEN
  698.         My Dad had to help me pack. Suddenly
  699.         he's afraid he's never gonna see me 
  700.         again or something. It was sweet, but it
  701.         took forever. Anyway, I guess I'm ready
  702.         to go.

  704.     At the freight station, Carmen enters her Federal I.D. card and gets
  705.     numbered tags for her bags.
  706.  
  707.                 JOHNNY
  708.         Me, too. I'm wearing everything I own.
  709.  
  710.     Johnny loads them onto a conveyor belt.
  711.  
  712.                 CARMEN
  713.         Poor boy. I'm sorry your parents were so mad.
  714.  
  715.                 JOHNNY
  716.         Who cares ! The Federation'll give me everything
  717.         I need for the next two years, right ?
  718.     
  719.     Carmen's already moved to the next line. Johnny follows.

  725.         He left this morning. He couldn't say where.

  727.     Carmen logs in, enters her destination:    LUNA - TERESHKOVA
  728.     FLEET ACADEMY.    The tickets station spits out a pass.
